CLEVER research on trusted GHG emission accounting published in EARPA Form Forum 2025

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new scientific article presenting intermediate results and key methodological developments from the CLEVER project.

The article, “Systematic Frameworks for Trusted GHG Emission Accounting in Renewable Transport Fuels”, has been published by Springer Nature as Chapter 5 of EARPA Form Forum 2025 – Insights into Future Road Mobility.

As Europe moves towards climate-neutral transport, reliable and transparent greenhouse-gas emission accounting is increasingly important. The article presents work undertaken within CLEVER to address inconsistencies between existing emission-factor methodologies and support the development of a more harmonised, transparent and scientifically robust approach to calculating GHG emissions from transport energy carriers.

The research examines methodological choices that can significantly influence reported emissions, including life-cycle modelling approaches, system boundaries, land-use change, multifunctionality and allocation, and the treatment of infrastructure. CLEVER’s approach establishes an attributional basis for emission-factor development, alongside transparent rules and a modular life-cycle framework designed to improve consistency and comparability.

The publication is an important milestone for CLEVER, translating the project’s gap analysis and emerging methodology into a contribution to the wider transport research community. It also reflects CLEVER’s participation in the EARPA Form Forum 2025, which brings together European automotive research organisations, industry and policymakers to exchange knowledge and explore the future direction of mobility research.The paper begins on page 65 of the volume.
